Uganda is most popular for its Gorilla tracking and this is something that all tourists who land here should try and do. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the last remaining habitats of the mountain gorilla and 32 permits are available per day to visit the park. The park is also home to various other primates like chimpanzees and baboons; the park also has elephants, bushbucks and the rare giant forest hog.
There are a few wetland destinations that are rapidly growing as tourist destinations within Uganda . Lake Bunyoni is one of them, which has got a range of hotels and camping sites on which tourists can relax and enjoy bird watching. There is a cluster of 200 crater lakes that is north of Queen Elizabeth Park and has been developed as a community based eco-tourism destination because of its prolific scenic beauty and serenity.
The source of the mighty Nile is the waterfall considered to be the source of Nile and is flanked by the city of Ginja . It is a popular tourist destination as it offers some of the best white water rafting available anywhere in the world.
The place also offers game fishing opportunities and a spectacular view below the waterfalls. There are plenty of hippos, crocodiles and an awesome variety of birdlife all of which add to the scenery.
A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is needed and all visitors are required to take malaria prophylactic drugs prior to travel. Once in Uganda, you could rent a car, take a mini-bus, a regular bus, or take a bicycle taxi! Driving is on the left side of the road and you can drive with an international permit. The cost of fuel however is quite high and there are virtually no signs to navigate around.
Buses and mini-buses connect most major towns, and mini-buses or share buses are preferable because they are safer, faster and cheaper. You can also join an organized safari and travel with the tour operator. Most cities are connected with a network of well-built roads.
The currency in Uganda is the Uganda shilling and 1 USD fetches roughly around 1600 Uganda shillings. Ugandan currency is a stable one and the rate doesn't change much on a daily basis. Tourists should carry a largely traveler's checks and remaining in USD. Money can be exchanged in forex bureaus found at the border posts and at most major cities.
The dry season is the best to visit Uganda and ranges between December to late February. The next best time to visit is between June to September. Though one can visit at other times of the year, mountain hiking, trekking and gorilla tracking can't be done outside of the dry months.
Tourists should bring along with them a lot of light clothing, as the day temperatures tend to get quite warm. For people who plan to go trekking on the mountains light sweaters should also be packed. Apart from this suntan, sunglasses, hats, cameras and waterproof jackets would also be helpful.
You should bring along your valid passport with you and based on the visa requirement, if needed, a visa can be purchased on the spot.
